about mark
A lifelong native of Niagara Falls, Canada, Mark Rogers started playing drums when he was eight years old; by the age of eighteen, he was recognized by the Canadian Jazz Festival as the top drummer in the country for his age group. Over 40 years later, Mark still enjoys a busy full-time career as a professional musician performing, recording, producing and teaching.
Since 1981 Mark has taught over 1000 students, many who have become professional drummers working all over the world. For others, it began a journey towards the many facets of the music business and the arts. From beginner students of the instrument, to advanced drummers who need an inspirational reboot, Mark's teaching approach is in demand for all types of drummers, young and old.
"Being an active musician, I have the opportunity to pass along real world experiences to my students."
curriculum
Personalized lessons at my home studio in Niagara Falls, Canada.
-
Introductory concepts to build independence and 4-way coordination of 8th note Rock and Country patterns are developed and practiced. Students initially use Mark's "number system" as an alternative to traditional music theory allowing beginners to concentrate on playing first, before being introduced to drum theory at the intermediate level.
-
More challenging independence and coordination patterns are explored using 16th note Funk, Rock, and triplet based Shuffle patterns. The "number system" is gradually replaced with basic music theory using Ted Reed's "Syncopation" and Gary Chester's "The New Breed" study books.
-
Jazz and Latin American rhythms are deeply explored using both sticks and brushes. Students will combine these grooves with Funk and Paradiddle patterns using triplet, sextuplet, and 32nd note feels. Continued reading exercises will develop at a university level, and various applications using the metronome will be practiced to help achieve the students' "inner clock".
